Bilas: a Pidgin English word used widely in Papua New Guinea, that generally refers to the decoration or adornment of your body.

When one spends a significant amount of time in a culture and place that is not their “home” they are changed forever. Each place can affect you in different ways and those places rub off on us leaving a mark that I like to think of as bilas.

In my view, the traditional bilas was not only decoration. It revealed status, the more elaborate the headdress, the more powerful one is. It could indicate where a person was from, their age, or their prowess as hunter or warrior.

We each are changed by places, people and experiences. In a sense we ‘wear’ that as bilas. Not everyone can see it, but if one was to take some time to really see you, they would start to recognize it. It can be the way you talk, your passions, your sensitivities, what you like to eat, how you like to live, etc.

Be Lyrebirds is a collection of people who spent a significant amount of their lives living among cultures other than their passport countries. This album is made up of songs that reveal some of the bilas we wear as a result.
